Sebastien got tangled up in a length of white ribbon hanging from a Mylar balloon as he entered the house, which looked like a flower shop. There were bouquets of varying species and colors on nearly every flat surface—the table in the entry, the dining room table, the coffee table, even the fireplace hearth and mantle. Hank was lying on the couch, looking through get well cards.

“Hey, bro. How’s it going?” he asked.

“It’s going fine. How are you holding up?”

Sebastien decided not to mention that Hank’s favorite detective now hated him and the whole cold case thing had crashed like the Hindenburg.

“Pretty good. I’m sore and it hurts to breathe. On the bright side, there’s a box of candy as big as my head on the table there. Help yourself.”

“Where’s Melissa?” Sebastien asked.

“She and Kirby went to the store. Don’t ask me where your dog is. Not my turn.”

“Speaking of that. Do you think Melissa would mind if I left Parsifal here with you for a few days?”

Hank lowered the card he had been reading.

“Where are you going?”

“I need to run back home. There’s some business at the Block I have to handle.”

“All the way to California? I thought this was your home now?”

“I’m still trying to figure that out.”

Hank moved the stack of cards from his lap to the coffee table and gave Sebastien a troubled look.

“Are you okay, Sebastien?”

“Oh yeah, yeah. Fine. It’s all good. I just need to run back.”

“Are you going to fly?”

“No. I need to bring a few things back with me.”

“What’s going on, little brother? Everything okay at work?”

“Sure. We’ve made great progress. I actually think we’re just about halfway there with the Cheyenne thing.”

“O-kay. That’s good. Good job, bro.”

“Yeah, thanks.” Sebastien pointed down the hall and said, “So, I’m just going to grab some stuff and head out. Thanks for watching Parsifal.”

“You don’t want to wait for Melissa?”

“I want to get going before it gets dark.”

“It is dark,” replied Hank, now totally confused.

“Well . . . yeah. Anyway, thanks.”

Sebastien started down the hall to the guest bedroom.

“Sebastien?”

“Yeah?”

“How are things with Tiffany?”

“She’s good. I think the first few days after the shooting were hard. But she seems to be getting back into the swing of things.”

“That’s not what I asked, Sebastien.”

Sebastien ignored his brother and resumed his way to the guest bedroom.
